Personality: Kanata is a fairly friendly fellow. He likes people, he likes learning about their experiences, and in particular he likes finding people that he shares hobbies with. After all, what’s more fun than playing games you like together with other people, or sharing sweets with people that you like? Nothing, right? That’s what he thinks, at least.
But he’s a little bit shy, despite being an outgoing person. He can be a bit awkward around strangers if there is no excuse, like something hobby- or work related, to approach. He’s a bit private, about his past and his reason for becoming a Doctor, and for deciding to study medicine in the first place. He has good reasons, but in the first place, they are very private.
That doesn’t mean that he is only fun-loving. He’s a dedicated doctor, set on helping people. Particularly lately, he has been inspired by Souma, who isn’t afraid of sacrificing his life if it means that he can save the people right in front of him. He’s not about to throw himself head-first into danger if there are alternatives though, a Doctor only has so much blood, and Kanata is not so reckless that he’ll throw away his life so easily, though he just like most Doctors has a certain level of survivor’s guilt related to his experience with the Flower (and he has his own brand of it related to his mother’s death as well)- but he’s not a fool, nor does he have a deathwish.
He’s knowledgeable about not only his hobbies, but about his profession. Kanata is smart, studious, and dedicated. Despite only still being 20 years old, he is a full-fledged Doctor of Gokurakuen, which means that he is a very capable doctor and has a good hold of his own mind; he doesn’t let the Shinigami Flower in his blood take over.
Kanata is not scared of blood, or gritty stuff, or horror stories, or water, or the Shinigami Flower, but he is scared of the dark. He has reason to, but it’s reasons he would have a hard time sharing. He will never go anywhere without his nightlights, though.
Kanata believes in doing the right thing, though he sometimes doesn't think about what other consequences it can have for him, such as when he releases Souma from holding and he's told to go catch him again. But where there is a will, there is a way. Somehow or other, though it might not always be obvious and might go against orders.
He is a empathetic person, able to easily put himself in another person's shoes. He finds showing that and showing sympathy is a little bit more difficult, but he's still capable at it. One of the reasons that he became a doctor was because he didn't want to feel weak again, another was that he wanted to help people in situations similar to what he had been in, and then he just believes in doing what's right and in helping people. He is a kind person.
Though he is also a bit, or rather plenty, snarky overall, even to people that he respects, like the senior unit captains on the ship he belongs to. But you know, that's teenagers for you, and he's just passed his teen years. He's also a little bit lazy, but a hard-working lazy person. He'll do his job and he'll study and he'll dedicate himself, but he'll sneak in some naps if he's able to. As a result he's a pretty calm guy overall, and is capable of being composed even in stressful situations, which is a necessary skill for a doctor and surgeon.
Abilities:
- Medical: Has been a doctor for the past three years and has been studying for even longer. His blood is toxic to the Shinigami flower and it's used to treat people who has been infected, and to kill the flower if it's too far gone. He's a fairly skilled sugeon and knows a lot about medicines.
- Culinary: He's only a decent cook but he's really good at making wagashi. He also knows the theory of making proper green tea and wagashi that can't be made in his time. Though, take into consideration that plants and animals are exincts and ingredients are reploduced in labs and the likes.
- Marksmanship: Although he's only used the guns they use to shoot Shinigami flowers, he's a good marksman.
- Driving: He's very good at driving motor bikes and the floating bikes that Gokurakuen have. He also knows how to drive cars.
- Gaming: He's a huge gamer and spends a fair amount of time playing various games, both new and old ones. He's really good at it, too.

Emotion Sample: Kanata rubs his fingertips against the bark of a tree. Birch, somebody said it was called. It's pretty cool. Both how it looks, the way it feels, and the fact that it exists, that he can touch it. It's something that he probably won't ever get over; plants existing, and not trying to use you as soil and as a result kill you. It's amazing. He presses his palms to the smooth and rough surface, feeling the texture shift. He stares up when he hears soft rustling, and he watches with quiet wonder at the flowers that blooms.
It's not supposed to bloom so quickly, so randomly, is it? It's only the Shinigami that does that, or so had he thought. But it's cool, and he needs to burn the memory into his mind, so that he doesn't gorget the wonder of plants, of flowers, being quiet and kind.

Its pollen is harmful to the human body. If a subject inhales too much of it, germination will take place within his or her body. The bud extracts nutrients from human flesh and blood, causing the health of the host to deteriorate, and eventually bursts into full bloom, killing its host. It's a disturbing disease which only very few Doctors can cure.
These Doctors come from Gokurakuen.
Gokurakuen is a medical organization specialized in treating bizarre diseases that regular doctors cannot cure. They roam the seas and can travel anywhere, and they also provide door-to-door service.
To be able to cure people from the Shinigami Flower, special Doctors are created. To become a Doctor of Gokurakuen, you have to consume the Shinigami's Flower and have the cells infiltrate your body. You ingest the Shinigami's poison in minimal amounts. Over time, you create antibodies using your own flesh and blood, until finally, you become poisonous to the Shinigami. The Doctor himself becomes the only cure to the Flower of Death. During parts of the process, the Doctors are locked into liquid filled capsules connected to a capsule with a Shinigami Flower. Becoming a Doctor is a very dangerous process, and not everyone survive it. Doctors are basically "created" like guinea pigs, experiments with their lives on the line, partially in a lab. The Shinigami continues to live inside the Doctors. After creating antibodies, the Doctors never stop fighting against the poison inside of them. They're constantly shouldering risks, and if you show any sign of weakness, you're consumed.

Kanata was born to a couple in the outskirts of Goujo, Nara, being their second child. He has a seven year older sister. His parents met through their shared interest in retro stuff, his mom being a barrister and his dad running a record shop. His mom taught him how to make wagashi (though, with the artificial ingredients produced) and gave him books on it because he showed interest in it. He also has an interest in video games, and he also went to the mountains a lot on his way home from school, since they lived close by.
When he was almost 6, his whole family was supposed to go watch Kanata's sister's music competition but Kanata was sick and he couldn't go, so his mom stayed with him to take care of him. In the afternoon a man blaming Kanata's mom for his divorce broke in, and Kanata's mom locked Kanata into a cupboard in the livingroom. While he was locked in there he heard the man kill his mom in misplaced revenge. Kanata was locked into the cupboard for three nights before people realized where he was; since then he's been terrified of the darkness. He still sleeps with a nightlight despite being an adult. When he came hom from the hospital, where he had stayed for a week, he learned that his dad had shut down and checked out. Since then, Kanata's sister had to take care of them both, and take over the shop.
Kanata wanted to help his dad and wanted to not feel so helpless if he was faced with a situation where he could save someone if he had the knowedge to, and decided to become a doctor.
When he was 14, Kanata and some of his friends got caught in an incident with the Shinigami Flower, and Kanata was one of two who survived. The other person distanced themself from all that had to do with it, including Kanata, and Kanata dug out all the info he could on the Flower and started studying at Gokurakuen, to become a Doctor.
When he was 17 he became a fullfledged Doctor of Gokurakuen and a member of the eighth dispatch unit. When he was almost 18, it was revealed that some doctors of Gokurakuen staged Shinigami outbreaks for the sake of publicity. They let the Shinigami bloom on purpose before killing them, just to gain personal glory. All the involved doctors were dishonorably discharged and some of them ended up committing suicide.
At 19 he was made the captain of the fifth dispatch unit, and he's been working as a captain for a little under a year now. Since the bulk of the story takes place in May 252, he has just recently turned 20.
One day in May, the captain of the first dispatch unit stabbed the director of Gokurakuen. That captain was Ichinose Souma, the director's grandson, and Kanata thought it was weird that he would attack his only family. But when Kanata, under the lead of the captains of unit two and unit eight, met a person looking like Souma attacking people with a specially altered gun that infected people with the Shinigami, making it spread over the ship. Souma told them that he had destroyed the lifeboats, and Kanata was ordered by the captain of the second division unit to go check. When Kanata reached the place where the lifeboats were stored he found that the boats were all completely fine.
After he returned to report about the boats they found Ichinose, who had fled from the other two captains, had been infected by the Shinigami, though since he was a Doctor it was fine, and wouldn't spread. They arrested Souma, and started to evacuate the ship and save as many as they could. When a message was broadcasted all aboard the ship that it would detonate in ten minutes so that the Shinigami wouldn't spread further, they worked even faster to evacuate people. Souma started to treat people as well, despite the fact that he was under arrest. Because Souma was a really great doctor, Kanata only tried to stop him once, and that was because he intended to treat three people at once. Since the only antidote is a Doctor's blood it's inadvisable to cure too many at the same time, but Souma still went through with it. Souma was also acting completely different from when he was attacking people aboard the ship, and more like he usually did.
After the ship exploded and they fished the last person out of the water - the PR department's Kajiwara Ayumu, a close friend of Souma's - they made it to the shore and Souma is put in an electromagnetic cage. Kanata was made to guard him, and during the time, Ayumu showed up and talked to Souma. The conversation ended with Souma and Ayumu deciding to ditch the camp site and seek out the culprits behind the attack, and Kanata let Souma escape. Ayumu gave him data that proved Souma's innocence - a person dressed up as him and wore his face - and the identities of the real culprits. Two former employees of Gokurakuen, one current, one unknown, and Souma's younger brother. They all hated Gokurakuen because they found out about the incident two years ago where some Doctors only looked for publicity and glory. They were under the misconception that all Doctors were like that, and it was for revenge that they attacked Gokurakuen. It was also revealed that the culprits intended to crash their ship into Japan and make the Shinigami infect and destroy the whole world. They also spread false information about Gokurakuen across the country, saying that Gokurakuen was lying and were actually spreading the Shinigami disease instead of curing it, to ruin the organization's reputation and make people lose their trust in the Doctors.
Because Kanata let Souma and Ayumu escape, he was sent to get them back. But after the enemy ship was consumed by the Shinigami, he was only able to find Ayumu. Most likely, Souma was completely devoured by the Shinigami together with the culprits and the ringleader, Souma's younger brother Takara. But Kanata brought Ayumu back to shore, and after that the hard, tiring work of rebuilding Gokurakuen and salvaging the reputation of the organization, started.
